"Spot On" my friend. Wish I'd known you were in AA as I'd have been honored to sit with you a bit at the old watering hole. Maybe some day will hold a chance for a sail together on the bay. May your personal sail on life's journey be a bit less rocky than recent winds have provided, and the new breeze caught be a cool one! (corny analogy; it's clear I'm neither a great writer or thinker, but I continue to find your observations strike a real chord with me, much like those of Mitch Albom, and Leonard Pitts do - thanks for sharing)

After reading this, I believe you are well on your way to becoming the person you want to be. I believe you always knew, you just had a few, shall we say "detours" along the way. Society defines what we must and must not do when we are young. We go to high school, we go to college, we get married and not necessarily in that order. So, when things do not go to "societies" plan, I think we second guess ourselves. Some of us are never so lucky as to figure it out in our lifetimes.
As we grow up, we definitely grow wiser. We redefine who we are and what really matters in life.
Does that mean giving it all up? I don't necessarily believe so. Not unless you feel the need to do so. You can do so much with where you are. You can lead by example, touch the lives of those you come in contact with. As you blog about those you have met. Think about the impact you have made on their lives as well. So, in fact you have started to give back, be international, and do more than just be corporate. So, while you are leary of taking that first step, you have done so. That is why I like this quote so well. "To the world you might be one person, but to one person you just might be the world." You may have impacted someone somewhere and not even realized it yet. So, continue to put one foot in front of the other... and maybe just maybe you will meet that someone you are looking for.
And if God closes the door,NEVER give up. Go to the window. The view is different but just as beautiful from there as well.

preach it, brother :) i think you nailed it: so many are only tolerant as long as one agrees w/ their brand of beliefs... which isn't tolerance at all, of course. Me? i'm w/ you: free will all the way. (I love that quote from T2: no fate but what we make)

Free will doesn't mean we're free of consequences; it just means that we're free to do as we choose, even if consequences are included (thus, God's provision of heaven/hell is perfectly acceptable, in my world). the one place i'm pretty intolerant about is w/ children: i honestly don't believe one has the right to inflict harm on children. As a teacher, I've seen far too much, and my personal opinion regarding capital punishment and those who drink/do drugs during pregnancy or perpetrate molestations is a little too blue to detail here.

i love that reagan quote:

"Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves."

take care, friend -- & good luck in deciding how to vote. just glad you choose to exercise that particular freedom :)

I definitely agree and understand that! I would never recommend a single woman give a man a ride. To that end, I would never ask a single woman for a ride either.. so as not to put her in an awkward position. It's those guys in pickups that blow my mind.. ah well.. at least I got some good exercise.. right?

so...not as an excuse at all, but as a woman, i have to say i'm particularly aware of my surroundings. i'm aware if there's a male walking behind me, or paralleling me across the street, or glancing at me in any fashion, particular or not. although my heart goes out to people along the road, my brain reminds me of serial killer stories, all too true and all too random many times. I vow not to be a statistic.

that being said, when i noticed the car in my rearview mirror get a flat tire and swerve over, i turned around and offered the male driver a ride into town (only about 16 miles in our rural area). of course, i had to provide advice regarding the parking of his car (he just parked on the road!!). he did not try to accost or kill me...but all along i was thinking about my escape plan.

so, i guess, it's a crazy world we live in. sad but crazy. i'm sorry for what you went through -- i'm sorry you have to face ugly-hearted people. but this is all why i passionately believe in rural america -- and why i think rural america is the only way we'll escape this deep recession with a soul left.

just my 2 cents worth

Not sure that I've faced any more trials most people do.. although since I write about them it might seem like it! I have become a student of people in a way I never was before since I started writing.. I hope it makes for better characters in my stories.. but if nothing else.. I totally agree.. it helps me to better understand people. Like you say, people aren't going to react as you would.. and that's ok.. within reason.. but there can be multiple ways to view and approach an issue... and they can all be acceptable. I think there'd be many less problems and conflicts in the world if people were willing to allow others to approach life in their own way.. and respect them for doing so..

Thanks for reading
